Indications:
Indicated for the management of:
* Constipation (acute and chronic)
* Softening of stool in hemorrhoids and post-operative conditions
* Hepatic encephalopathy (to reduce blood ammonia levels)
Dosage:
Constipation:
* Adults: 15–30 ml daily (adjust as needed)
* Children: 5–15 ml daily
Hepatic Encephalopathy:
* 30–45 ml, 3–4 times daily (as directed by physician)
(Dose should be adjusted to achieve 2–3 soft stools per day)
Contraindications:
* Hypersensitivity to lactulose
* Galactosemia
* Intestinal obstruction
Administration:
For oral use.
May be taken with water, juice, or milk.
Can be taken with or without food.
Ensure adequate fluid intake during therapy.
Interaction:
Use caution with:
* Other laxatives (may alter dosing response)
* Antibiotics (may reduce effectiveness in hepatic encephalopathy)
* Antacids (may reduce acidification of colon)
